Biography

Joseph Elliott specializes in photography of historic infrastructure and industrial architecture. For the past 30 years, he has worked with clients such as the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS), the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the University of Pennsylvania, Argonne National Laboratory, and various cultural resource engineering firms. His work is included in collections at the Athenaeum of Philadelphia, the Library of Congress, Lehigh University, and the Minneapolis Institute of Art. His photographs have been published in notable magazines such as Common Ground, Smithsonian, Wired, and Metropolis. Elliott is the author of several notable works including a monograph titled 'Steel' published by Columbia College Chicago Press in 2013, 'Palazzos Power' co-authored with Aaron Wunsch, which was published by Princeton Architectural Press in 2016, 'Philadelphia: Finding Hidden City' co-authored with Peter Woodall and Nathaniel Popkin, published by Temple University Press in 2017, and 'Exchange for Gold' co-authored with Richard Niesenbaum, published by Common Ground Research Networks in 2019. In recognition of his contributions to the field of historic preservation, Elliott received the Henry M. Magaziner Award from the American Institute of Architects, Philadelphia Chapter, in 2025.
