Biography

Joseph Ferreira is a Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) within the Department of Urban Studies and Planning, having joined the faculty in the early 1970s. He holds undergraduate and doctoral degrees from MIT, specializing in operations research. His research primarily focuses on Urban Analytics and Spatial Analysis for Urban Planning and Management, with an emphasis on geoprocessing and spatially-detailed urban data models related to land use, transportation, and environmental interactions. Ferreira has served as a principal investigator for numerous research projects funded by various agencies and foundations, including the National Science Foundation and the Department of Transportation. His recent work has explored urban performance measures, development impacts, and risk management in relation to coordinated housing and transportation policies. He is also the founding director of MIT's Planning Department's Computer Resource Lab and has significantly advanced the Department’s urban data science initiatives. Throughout his career, he has held leading positions in professional organizations, including serving as the Past President of the Urban Regional Information Systems Association (URISA).
