Harpsichordist Joseph Gascho joined the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance’s Department of Organ in September 2014 as an associate professor. Gascho enjoys a multifaceted musical career as a solo and collaborative keyboardist, conductor, teacher, and recording producer. His performances include solo and collaborative works, and his debut solo recording was praised by the American Record Guide for its sparkling articulation and understanding of national styles in 17th and 18th-century harpsichord music. In 2002, he won the prize at the Jurow International Harpsichord Competition. He earned his master's and doctoral degrees in harpsichord from the Peabody Conservatory at the University of Maryland, where he also studied orchestral conducting. His recent highlights include performances with the National Symphony Orchestra, at Carnegie Hall, and with the Kennedy Center Opera Orchestra. He has conducted numerous operas by composers such as Monteverdi and Mozart and is involved in teaching and coaching at Oberlin Conservatory’s Baroque Performance Institute. A strong proponent of technology in the arts, Gascho has utilized computer-assisted techniques in opera productions and is a sought-after recording producer for various ensembles.
