Dr. Joseph Gone

Biography

Professor Joseph P. Gone is a prominent social scientist specializing in the dynamics of Indigenous mental health and community well-being. He has dedicated over thirty years to collaborating with American Indian and Indigenous communities, aiming to innovate traditional mental health services by incorporating cultural practices and spirituality. He holds a PhD in health service psychology and has taught at the University of Michigan before joining Harvard's faculty. He is an enrolled member of the Aaniiih-Gros Ventre Tribal Nation in Montana, where he also served as Chief Administrative Officer at the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation. Professor Gone's research interests include Indigenous cultural psychologies, colonial narratives of mental health, and the development of community-based treatment strategies. His work, which encompasses over 120 scientific articles, has substantially contributed to fields like cultural psychology, social psychiatry, and indigenous studies. He has received numerous accolades, including a Guggenheim Fellowship and the 2021 APA Award for Distinguished Professional Contributions. As a mentor, he encourages students to engage deeply with health sciences related to Indigenous communities in the USA and Canada.
