Biography

Joseph Ho Yong Kuen, commonly known as Joseph, obtained his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Malaya. His doctoral thesis, awarded distinction, interlinked population balances and cybernetic models, and was supervised by Prof. Doraiswami Ramkrishna at Purdue University. He has extensive teaching experience, having served as a tutor at the University of Malaya for three years during his Ph.D. studies under the Bright Sparks Scholarship scheme. Joseph also held a short teaching stint at the School of Engineering of Taylor’s University before joining Monash University Malaysia as a lecturer. From 2017 to 2019, he was the course director for the Chemical Engineering discipline at Monash University Malaysia, and he was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2020. His research focuses on addressing key challenges in biomass utilization to generate renewable energy, underpinned by a deeper understanding of process fundamentals. He explores biomass digestibility and fermentation systems through computational modeling and discrete/continuum approaches. Joseph also leads the Computational Biomass & Biopolymer Engineering (CBBE) research group, developing innovative computational tools to interpret complex systems. He is committed to undergraduate teaching and outlining courses in computing and chemical engineering. Joseph is accepting PhD students and encourages candidates interested in computational research, especially those with a passion for mathematics and computing.
