Biography

Joseph M. Jacobson is an Associate Professor at the MIT Media Lab, where he leads the Molecular Machines Group and is a founding member of the Center for Bits and Atoms. His research has significantly contributed to various areas of science and engineering, including Generation Error Correcting Gene Synthesis, programming cells to generate pharmaceuticals, and the development of Printed Inorganic Electronics. Jacobson has begun focusing on the intersection of Machine Learning and high throughput synthesis to innovate in the design and testing of novel proteins and small molecules. He received his Ph.D. in Physics from MIT in 1992, specializing in femtosecond laser physics. Jacobson has published extensively, authoring 70 peer-reviewed papers and holds 115 issued U.S. patents. His accolades include the Technology Review TR100 Award, the Gutenberg Prize, the Discover Award, and the Exner Medal. Beyond academia, Jacobson is a founding director of the non-profit foundation, One Laptop Per Child, which aims to enhance education through technology for children worldwide.
