Biography

Joseph M. Kahn is a Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Stanford University. His research focuses on communication, imaging, optical fibers, modulation, detection, signal processing, and spatial multiplexing. He received his A.B. and Ph.D. degrees in Physics from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1981 and 1986, respectively. He was a part of AT&T Bell Laboratories from 1987 to 1990, and subsequently joined the Electrical Engineering faculty at UC Berkeley from 1990 to 2003. In 2000, he co-founded StrataLight Communications, which was later acquired by Opnext, Inc. in 2009. He has been recognized with several awards, including the National Science Foundation Presidential Young Investigator Award and being named a Life Fellow of IEEE. He served as Chair of the Academic Affairs Committee in the Department of Electrical Engineering from 2012 to 2022 and has received various honors for his contributions to undergraduate education.
