Biography

Joseph Katz is the William F. Ward Sr. Distinguished Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Johns Hopkins University. He is recognized for his significant contributions to the field of engineering research and education, especially in the area of experimental fluid mechanics. His research includes advanced diagnostics techniques for both laboratory and field applications, focusing on phenomena such as cavitation, turbulence, and environmental flows. He directs the Laboratory for Experimental Fluid Dynamics, where he investigates turbulent boundary layers, flow instabilities in turbomachines, and the swimming behavior of marine plankton. Katz has co-authored more than 150 journal articles and 220 conference papers, along with several book chapters and patents. His research has received funding from various esteemed organizations, including the Office of Naval Research, National Science Foundation, NASA, and the Department of Energy. He co-founded and currently directs the Johns Hopkins Center for Environmental Applied Fluid Mechanics and is a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the American Physical Society. Katz has received multiple awards, including the ASME Fluids Engineering Award in 2004.
