Biography

Joseph S. C. Lam is a professor of Musicology at the School of Music, Theatre & Dance at the University of Michigan. As a musicologist and sinologist, Lam specializes in the music cultures of the Southern Song (1127-1275), Ming (1368-1644), and modern China (1900-present). He frequently lectures across China, Europe, and the U.S. Among his recent publications are "Why Chinese Sing Shijing Songs?" included in the Oxford Handbook of Chinese Music (edited by Jonathan Stock and Yu Hui, 2023), as well as contributions to the Oxford Handbook of Music and Queerness (2022) and Read Chinese Drama (2021). His monograph, "Kunqu, Classical Opera Globalized China," published by Hong Kong University Press in 2022, enhances understanding of Kunqu opera in contemporary contexts. Lam regularly teaches courses on Chinese music culture, ethnomusicology practices and theories, and historical music practices. In Winter 2024, he is set to teach a course on shiyue, traditional Chinese songs based on the Shijing, a classic anthology of Confucian texts.
