Joseph Lanza is a lecturer and Director of the Early Music Studio at the Don Wright Faculty of Music, Western University. With over 25 years of experience as the Concertmaster of Orchestra London, he has engaged audiences in a wide range of solo works. An accomplished performer in chamber music, Lanza has participated in numerous smaller ensembles and concert series in London and Toronto. His passion for music from the 17th and 18th centuries has led him to explore new musical territories, particularly through the performance of period instruments. He began studying Baroque violin in 1993 under Jeanne Lamon and Stephen Marvin, later attending the Oberlin Baroque Performance Institute for further studies with Marilyn McDonald and Jaap Schroder. Lanza has held regular engagements with Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra and Opera Atelier, contributing to recordings and tours across Europe and the Far East. Originally from Philadelphia, he comes from a large musical family connected to the Philadelphia Orchestra. An enthusiastic teacher, he has also been involved in private instruction and academic teaching at Western University. Lanza is married to Jennifer Short, an English hornist and oboist with Orchestra London, and they share a daughter, Heather, along with a beloved Shetland sheepdog.
