Biography

Joseph Loscalzo is the Hersey Distinguished Professor of the Theory and Practice of Medicine and the Samuel Levine Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. His research primarily investigates the roles of redox determinants in normal and abnormal blood vessel function, with a specific focus on nitric oxide, a critical endothelial product that is susceptible to oxidative inactivation. His laboratory explores the molecular responses of endothelial cells to hypoxia, detailing how the free radical nitric oxide interacts with various molecules in the vascular environment to elicit biological responses. He has notably examined how alterations in the thiol proteome through oxidative posttranslational modifications impact protein function and cellular phenotype. Additionally, Loscalzo's work elucidates the regulatory role of microRNAs, such as mir210, under hypoxic conditions, particularly in metabolic transitions between oxidative phosphorylation and anaerobic glycolysis. His contributions have also led to the development of innovative fluorescent sensor proteins for monitoring cellular redox states in real-time.
