Biography

Joseph E. Lowry is an Associate Professor specializing in Arabic and Islamic Studies. His scholarly work focuses on Islamic law, Arabic literature, and classical Islamic thought. He is the author of 'Early Islamic Legal Theory: Risala Muhammad Ibn Idris al-Shafi'i' (Brill, 2007) and has edited significant works such as 'Medieval Islam: Studies in Memory of George Makdisi' (Gibb Memorial Trust, 2005) and 'Essays in Arabic Literary Biography II: 1350-1850' (Harrassowitz, 2009). He has translated al-Shafi‘i’s Epistle and contributed to the 'Library of Arabic Literature' (NYU Press, 2013). Joseph serves as a Consulting Editor for the Library of Arabic Literature and is involved with editorial boards for journals including 'Islamic Law Society' and 'Abbasid Studies'. Additionally, he is developing a series on Arabic Islamic Studies and the IQSA Studies in Qur’an series. Joseph is also completing his PhD and has experience in private legal practice.
