Biography

Joseph Lyman is an Associate Professor in the Astrophysics group at the University of Warwick, where he holds a UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship. His research primarily focuses on observing and characterizing astrophysical transients, primarily new flashes of light in the night sky that signal the deaths of stars and galaxies. Lyman investigates various forms of transients such as supernovae caused by the explosions of massive stars, aiming to understand their progenitors and the environments that host these explosive events. He was involved in the follow-up observations of electromagnetic counterparts to gravitational wave events, and led tasks associated with the GW170817/AT 2017gfo multi-messenger event. In teaching, he is a co-convener for the module PX458: Distant Universe. His work aims to leverage gravitational wave detection and advancements in observational astronomy to probe fundamental questions about the evolution of stars and galaxies.
