Biography

Joseph Moore is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Johns Hopkins University and the director of the Agile and Intelligent Robotics (AIRO) Laboratory. He is a member of the Laboratory for Computational Sensing Robotics (LCSR) and the Institute for Assured Autonomy (IAA). Dr. Moore holds a Bridging Faculty appointment with the Research Exploratory Development Department (REDD) at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU/APL). His research focuses on methods at the intersection of computational control, computational physics, and machine learning in order to enable robust, highly-agile robotic systems that can operate in complex, real-world environments. Before joining JHU full-time, he served as the Chief Scientist for the Robotics Group at JHU/APL, where he led research on control planning strategies for hybrid unmanned aerial-aquatic vehicles and heterogeneous multi-robot teams, including aerobatic fixed-wing vehicles. Dr. Moore has served as Principal Investigator (PI) for various programs with the Office of Naval Research (ONR) and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), developing flight controllers for aggressive post-stall maneuvering of fixed-wing aerial vehicles to enable precision landing in high-speed constrained environments. He has also been involved with Army Research Laboratory (ARL) programs to coordinate multi-robot teams in complex terrains.
