Dr. Joseph Newhouse

Biography

Joseph P. Newhouse is a Research Professor at Harvard University, holding the title of John D. MacArthur Professor of Health Policy Management (Emeritus). He is a member of several faculties at Harvard, including the Kennedy School, Medical School, and the T.H. Chan School of Public Health. He has served as a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. Newhouse received his B.A. and Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard University and has an honorary doctoral degree from the Pardee RAND Graduate School. His career spans twenty years at RAND, where he designed and directed the RAND Health Insurance Experiment. Newhouse was the head of the RAND Economics Department from 1981 to 1985. He has received numerous awards such as the Victor R. Fuchs Lifetime Achievement Award and the David N. Kershaw Award for his contributions to public policy analysis. With over 40 years of work in health economics, his research has focused on the optimization of healthcare services, the implications of health insurance policies, and more. He has authored or co-authored significant articles and has been recognized as a distinguished researcher in his field.
