Biography

Joseph Prestwich is a Teaching Associate in the Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages and Linguistics at the University of Cambridge, specializing in German-language theatre performance. He holds a PhD in German Theatre Performance Studies from King’s College London, awarded in July 2022. Before joining Cambridge, Joseph worked as a Lecturer in German at King’s College London from 2021 to 2022. He trained as an actor at the Guildford School of Acting. He has experience as an Assistant Director for the Arts Council England funded improvisation company ShakeItUp Theatre and is currently involved with the Young Vic Theatre on a theatre-in-education project called INNOVATE. His teaching interests include German-language theatre performance from the 18th century to the present, Bertolt Brecht’s theatre, Turkish-German literature and film, as well as translation. His research interests focus on theatre translation, Anglo-German theatrical exchange, European theatre networks, and Goethe’s theatrical practice. Joseph is also working on a practice-based postdoctoral research project examining Goethe’s approaches to acting and theatre-making.
