Biography

Joseph Schear is an Associate Professor and Official Student Tutor in the Department of Philosophy at Christ Church, University of Oxford. He specializes in Philosophy of Mind and Post-Kantian Philosophy. He earned his B.A. in Philosophy and Cognitive Science from the University of California, San Diego, and a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Chicago. Since moving to Oxford in 2008, he has held positions at various institutions, including serving as an Assistant Professor at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. Schear has published works including the edited volume "Mind, Reason, Being-in-the-World: The McDowell-Dreyfus Debate" (Routledge, 2012) and is currently working on a monograph titled "Horizons of Intentionality: Husserl and Heidegger." His research encompasses a range of issues from the nature of self-consciousness and historicity of conceptual schemes to problems within the phenomenological tradition and its implications in contemporary philosophy, particularly in relation to psychopathology. He co-convenes the Post-Kantian European Philosophy Seminar at the University and serves as an editor for the European Journal of Philosophy.
