Biography

Joseph S. Shapiro is an Associate Professor at the University of California, Berkeley, in the Department of Agricultural & Resource Economics and the Department of Economics. He is also a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research and an Associate at the Energy Institute Haas. Previously, he served as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Political Economy and as Co-Editor for the Journal of Public Economics. His research addresses two main questions: how globalization and the environment interact through trade and foreign investment, and how effective, efficient, and equitable environmental energy policies have been over the last half-century. His studies focus on climate change, air pollution, clean energy, and renewable and exhaustible natural resources, particularly concerning water pollution. Shapiro's work links economics with international trade, public finance, and health. He has developed a machine learning technology that helps firms comply with Clean Water Act regulations. His accolades include an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship, the Kiel Institute Excellence in Global Affairs Award, and a Marshall Scholarship. Shapiro earned his Ph.D. in economics from MIT and holds master's degrees from Oxford and the London School of Economics, as well as a BA from Stanford University.
