Joseph Sisneros is a Professor in the Department of Psychology and an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Washington. His research focuses on the Sisneros Lab, which studies adaptive plasticity in the auditory system and how it encodes behaviorally relevant social signals used in communication. The lab utilizes fish model systems to investigate ontogenetic steroid-dependent seasonal changes in the response properties and function of the auditory system. He is particularly interested in sound source localization, studying how fishes detect and locate underwater sound sources in both simple and complex acoustic environments. Joseph received his Bachelor of Science degree in Marine Biology from California State University, Long Beach in 1988, followed by a Master of Science in Biology in 1993, and a PhD in Biology from the Florida Institute of Technology in 1999. He completed his post-doctoral training at Cornell University in the Department of Neurobiology and Behavior from 1999 to 2004 before joining the faculty at the University of Washington in 2004.
