Dr. Joseph Winger

Biography

Joseph G. Winger, PhD, is a licensed clinical psychologist and Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Duke University School of Medicine. His research focuses on developing novel psychosocial interventions for patients facing life-limiting illnesses, with an emphasis on addressing the spiritual and existential aspects of coping with debilitating symptoms. He aims to maintain a sense of meaning and purpose in life for these patients. His work has been supported by grants from reputable organizations, including the National Cancer Institute and the American Cancer Society. Dr. Winger co-directs the Cognitive Behaviorally Informed Skills Training (CBIST) Program, which trains non-behavioral health specialists to integrate evidence-based cognitive behavioral skills into clinical practice to improve the quality of care and patient outcomes. He has also been involved in multiple randomized controlled trials testing the efficacy of telehealth-delivered psychosocial interventions and pain coping skills training for patients with advanced cancer.
