Biography

Joseph Yavitt is a full professor at Cornell University in the Natural Resources and Environment Section. He began his academic journey in southern California before moving east for further education in biogeochemistry and ecology, ultimately joining Cornell in 1988 as a post-doctoral researcher. He teaches undergraduate courses and trains both undergraduate and graduate students in research methodologies. His research primarily focuses on the structure and function of wetland and forest ecosystems. His interests include the variety of plant and animal species found in ecosystems and the challenges that biodiversity presents to biogeochemical and ecological theories. Yavitt has been involved in several long-term collaborative research projects that explore peatland ecosystems across central Canada to the southern Appalachian Mountains, as well as tropical forests in Panama.
