Biography

Josephine V. Carstensen is the Gilbert W. Winslow Career Development Professor in Civil Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Josephine's research focuses on the transformative opportunities presented by digitalization in design and manufacturing within the built environment. Her group develops and evaluates innovative design methods and tools that leverage structural mechanics and mathematical optimization to advance structural design. This work spans various length scales, including material architectures and components, as well as large-scale structural design. In addition to her research contributions, Josephine is actively involved in teaching senior-level courses in Civil and Environmental Engineering, including Civil Environmental Engineering Design, Solid Mechanics, and Topology Optimization of Structures. She has received several awards for her teaching and research excellence, including the NSF CAREER Award and the CEE Maseeh Excellence in Teaching Award.
