Biography

Josephine van den Bent is an Assistant Professor specializing in Medieval History at the University of Amsterdam. She received her PhD in History from the University of Amsterdam in 2020, with a dissertation titled 'The Mongols Mamluk Eyes: Representing Ethnic Medieval Middle East'. Her dissertation analyzed the representation of Mongols within the Mamluk Sultanate and explored how contemporary scholars engage in processes of ethnic identification and categorization as well as the dynamics of othering. Currently, her research focuses on the construction of ethnicity in the medieval Middle East and includes a postdoctoral project investigating water management in medieval cities such as Baghdad, Basra, and Mosul. In addition to her research, she teaches courses on Medieval History.
