Biography

Josh Atkinson is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Princeton University. His research focuses on the integration of synthetic biology, protein engineering, biophysics, and electrochemistry to understand and control the processes by which microbes and proteins transport electrons. The Atkinson Lab aims to elucidate the critical role of electron transport in energy and information processing within cells and microbial communities. By understanding these processes, the lab seeks to engineer innovative biotechnologies that address significant societal challenges, including sustainability, environmental monitoring and remediation, chemical synthesis, and resource recovery and extraction. Current research areas emphasize developing and applying design rules for (i) utilizing microorganisms and proteins to regulate electron transfer in metabolic networks, (ii) understanding how electron flows influence microbial community structure and impact geochemical cycles, and (iii) creating living electronic materials that couple information processing with the catalytic capabilities of biological and electrochemical devices.
