Biography

Josh Dean is an Associate Professor at the University of Bristol specializing in biogeochemistry and hydrology. His research focuses on the quantification of carbon flow from land to ocean within aquatic systems, with particular emphasis on methane dynamics. Josh has conducted fieldwork in diverse locations such as the East Siberian Arctic, Northwest Canadian Arctic, Yucatán Peninsula, and throughout Europe. He was awarded the 2025 Philip Leverhulme Prize in Geography and is a UKRI Future Leaders Fellow. Josh holds a BSc (Hons) in Geography from Massey University, New Zealand, and completed his PhD in Hydrogeology at La Trobe University in Australia. His interests include monitoring river metabolism to assess ecosystem services and understanding carbon cycling mechanisms in aquatic systems.
