Biography

Josh Neufeld is a Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Waterloo. His research focuses on the method development interface, basic microbial ecology, and applied research, providing exceptional training opportunities for students and postdoctoral research fellows. The Neufeld lab addresses important global challenges by characterizing bacterial and archaeal communities in terrestrial, aquatic, and host-associated habitats. The team is developing and applying cultivation-dependent molecular techniques to explore the pivotal roles microorganisms play in their communities and habitats. Current research projects include characterizing nitrifiers in engineered aquatic environments, exploring subsurface microbiology in deep geological repositories used for nuclear fuel, and investigating the impact of bacteria in Boreal Shield lakes on global biogeochemical cycling. In addition to his research, he is committed to microbiology communication and education, which has led to the authorship of a microbiology textbook and numerous teaching recognitions. He serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the ISME Journal.
