Biography

Josh Speagle is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Astronomy & Astrophysics and the Department of Statistical Sciences at the University of Toronto. He completed his Ph.D. in 2020 at Harvard University. His research interests focus on astrostatistics, utilizing statistical techniques and computer science to analyze large datasets in astronomy, particularly through multi-wavelength and large-area surveys. His work examines galactic structure and dynamics, stellar populations, the interstellar medium, and galaxy formation and evolution. Speagle has previously served as a Banting-Dunlap Postdoctoral Fellow, where he conducted joint research hosted by the Department of Statistical Sciences and the Dunlap Institute. His interdisciplinary approach combines astronomy with statistics, enabling the analysis of billions of stars and galaxies from wide-field imaging and spectroscopic surveys, ultimately contributing to understanding how galaxies, including the Milky Way, form, behave, and evolve over time.
