Biography

Joshua Apte is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley. His research focuses on air quality engineering techniques, air pollution exposure assessment, and the effects of air pollution on public health. Apte leads a research group that combines field measurements, mathematical models, and large dataset analyses to address policy-relevant air pollution challenges related to energy, infrastructure, and climate change. His work aims to identify technologies and policies for improving environmental sustainability in urban areas and reducing inequities in exposure to environmental contaminants, particularly in low-resource communities. Apte has researched particle air pollution, especially in the Indo-Gangetic basin in South Asia, and is involved in innovative projects like mapping urban air quality using specially equipped Google Street View cars. He holds a Ph.D. in Energy Resources from UC Berkeley and has previously worked as an ITRI-Rosenfeld Postdoctoral Fellow at the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab.
