Biography

Joshua D. Bard is an Associate Professor and Associate Head of Design Research at Carnegie Mellon University School of Architecture. He is an architectural educator conducting applied research at the intersection of construction culture and robotic technology. His teaching and research interrogate traditional binaries of design culture such as industry/craft and machine/hand. Bard focuses on discovering new potential for contemporary digital tools, moving beyond the logics of hand material craft. He creates augmented construction design systems that combine human skill with algorithmic translation and robotic automation. Collaborating with roboticists and computer scientists, he conducts basic research in human-machine interaction and virtual computing realities. He engages with historians and material scientists to explore construction theories and tacit knowledge. Bard is also a founding partner of Archolab, an award-winning research collaborative, which has received accolades like the Architect Magazine’s R+D Award and the Unbuilt Architecture Citation from the Boston Society of Architects. He has a Master of Architecture with distinction from the University of Michigan and a Bachelor of Arts in Literature and Philosophy from Wheaton College. Bard has taught courses in generative modeling and architectural robotics.
