Biography

Dr. Brinkerhoff received his PhD in Aerospace Engineering from Carleton University in Ottawa. In addition to his role as Associate Director of Research & Industrial Partnerships at the University of British Columbia Okanagan, he leads the UBC-Okanagan Computational Fluid Dynamics Laboratory. His research focuses on high-fidelity numerical simulations of fluid dynamics, particularly the mutual interactions of flow instabilities, phase instabilities, and turbulence across various applications. These include biomedical studies such as modeling the development of emphysema in lungs, renewable energy applications including wind farm interactions with the atmosphere and the aerodynamics of vertical-axis wind turbines, hydrogen safety in the context of detonation risks associated with hydrogen-blended natural gas, and aerospace applications involving hydrogen fuel systems for all-electric aviation. Furthermore, he researches cryogenics related to liquid hydrogen storage and phase transitions during spills. Dr. Brinkerhoff's work has significant implications for improving energy efficiency and safety in multiple industries.
