Joshua Edel is a professor of Biosensing and Analytical Sciences at the Department of Chemistry, Imperial College London. He received his PhD in 2003 for developing single molecule detection microfluidic systems at Imperial College London. Following this, he conducted postdoctoral research in nanobiotechnology at Cornell University's School of Applied and Engineering Physics. In 2005, he was awarded a research fellowship in single-molecule biophysics at the Rowland Institute at Harvard University. In July 2006, he joined Imperial College London as a lecturer in the Department of Chemistry and the Institute of Biomedical Engineering. He is an expert in developing trace analyte analytical platforms and bioanalytical sensors for clinical samples, having published over 180 research articles and given 170 invited talks. In 2011, he received the prestigious ERC Starting Grant for his work in rare event bioanalysis and later, in 2017, he was awarded the ERC Consolidator Award for developing selective single-molecule biosensors. His pioneering techniques include high throughput droplet microfluidics and optical electrical single-molecule sensors, among others. He has received funding from multiple organizations including EPSRC, ERC, Wellcome Trust, and various industrial partners, and serves as a consultant in the field of biosensing.
