Biography

Joshua Alexander Folk is a Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of British Columbia (UBC). He completed his Bachelor's Degree at Stanford University and subsequently earned a Doctorate. His academic journey includes significant positions such as Research Assistant at Stanford University from 1998 to 2003, Postdoctoral Fellow at MIT, and Research Associate at Delft University of Technology. He has served as an Assistant Professor at UBC from 2005 to 2010, followed by an Associate Professor until 2020, when he ascended to the role of Full Professor. Dr. Folk's research interests are in Quantum Electronics and 2D Materials, particularly in mesoscopic physics, quantum Hall effect, van der Waals heterostructures, and quantum thermodynamics. He actively recruits undergraduate and graduate students and postdoctoral researchers to join his group. He has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Department of Defense Graduate Research Fellowship, Stanford Graduate Fellowship, Pappalardo Postdoctoral Fellowship, and Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship.
