Biography

Joshua L. Freeman is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Comparative Literature at Brown University. He specializes in Uyghur literature and cultural history, particularly focusing on the twentieth-century context of China and Central Asia. His research explores the connections between literary works, communal identity, ideology, and personal networks within socialist states. Freeman's interest lies in cross-border nation-building and literary translation, encompassing the intricacies of poetry in this cultural exchange. Prior to joining Brown, he was an assistant research fellow at the Institute of Modern History at Academia Sinica and has been a Princeton Society Fellow. Freeman completed his PhD in Inner Asian and Altaic Studies at Harvard University in 2019 and has spent seven years residing in China's Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, which has significantly shaped his research perspective.
