Biography

Joshua Getzler has been appointed since 1993, focusing on modern legal research related to the duties of investment agents in financial markets, the economic structure of debt and equity securities, and the ontological liabilities of juridical entities. His historical research delves into the nature of fiduciary accountability within private and public relationships, Crown liabilities, and public finance, specifically in banking and investment. He has explored the evolution of property, trust, and corporate charitable forms from the late eighteenth to early nineteenth centuries. His doctoral monograph examined the juristic and economic factors that governed the control of water resources within historical common law. He is currently involved in advisory work with governmental native parties, addressing the relationship between native title, fiduciary accountability, and treaty law, particularly in the context of British North America and New Zealand. His new project investigates the status of native custom in Australian common law prior to the landmark case of Mabo v Queensland 2 (1992). Getzler's long-term interests include the role of law and politics in the context of lord chancellors and royal justices, especially during the Great Reform Act.
