Dr. Joshua Gulley

Biography

Joshua M. Gulley is a Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Illinois, where he serves as the Associate Head and Director of Undergraduate Studies. His research focuses on Behavioral Neuroscience, particularly the neurobiological and behavioral consequences of repeated exposure to psychoactive drugs such as alcohol, THC (cannabis), and amphetamines. Dr. Gulley investigates the impact of drug use on motivation and cognition, especially using rodent models to explore developmental differences in brain function. His lab employs a variety of methods including operant drug self-administration, behavioral sensitization, and multiple neuron electrophysiology to study drug responses and cognitive behaviors. His ongoing research questions address the functional immaturities in adolescent brains that may contribute to increased vulnerability to substance use and the adverse consequences of early drug exposure. Dr. Gulley is also involved in educational programs training students in both behavioral and physiological experimental techniques.
