Dr. Joshua Johnson

Biography

Joshua Johnson is an Assistant Professor at Duke University's School of Medicine, specializing in Orthopaedic Surgery and Physical Therapy. As a learning health systems researcher, he focuses on using patient outcomes and clinical process measures to evaluate and improve the value of services provided by rehabilitation clinicians. Dr. Johnson collaborates with health system leaders to understand and address priority problems that intersect rehabilitation practice, particularly in acute and post-acute care settings. He is a member of the Duke Clinical Research Institute and serves as Clinical Research Lead at Duke Health’s Department of Rehabilitation. Through his overlapping roles, he engages students, clinicians, and researchers to advance rehabilitation practice in an increasingly value-focused system. As a faculty member in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program, Dr. Johnson co-directs the Foundations of Cardiopulmonary Practice course and contributes to the curriculum content covering care design and health policy. His research has been funded by several esteemed organizations, including the Foundation for Physical Therapy Research and the NIH. Actively involved in professional affairs, he is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association and has served on various committees advocating for health policy and innovation in physical therapy research.
