Dr. Joshua Kates

Biography

Joshua Kates is a Visiting Professor in the Department of English Language and Literature at the University of Chicago. He has previously served as an Emeritus Professor of English and an Affiliate Professor in Comparative Literature and Germanic Studies at Indiana University, Bloomington. Kates has taught at various esteemed institutions including St. John's College, Santa Fe, SUNY-Binghamton, the University of California, Los Angeles, and Deep Springs College. His teaching and writing span a wide range of subjects, reflecting an extensive curriculum that covers topics such as the history of mathematics and science. He has offered courses on Shakespeare's plays and has delved into 20th and 21st-century literary theory and literature. Kates's selected publications include works on information technology, deconstruction, and the intersection of literary studies and philosophy. His recent course titled 'Derrida's History: Grammatology' examines Jacques Derrida's transformative impact on literary studies and philosophy, emphasizing his foundational texts and their implications for understanding history and writing.
