Biography

Joshua B. Kayser is a Professor of Clinical Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and the Director of the Medical Intensive Care Unit at the Corporal Michael J. Crescenz VA Medical Center. He specializes in Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine and Hospice & Palliative Medicine. Dr. Kayser's academic focus lies at the intersection of medical ethics and communication concerning end-of-life care in the ICU. He teaches bioethics, humanism, and professionalism at the School of Medicine, and has a dedicated interest in issues surrounding communication and conflict resolution in intensive care settings. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, he serves on several committees at the local and national levels, including the Student Standards Committee at the University of Pennsylvania and the Hospital Ethics Committee at the VA. He is also involved with the Patient Family Support Committee of the Society of Critical Care Medicine and the National ICU-Palliative Care Network. His research is part of Fostering Improvement in End-of-Life Decision Science (FIELDS) program at the University of Pennsylvania, where he investigates how end-of-life decisions are made. Dr. Kayser received his MD and MPH from Tulane University and his MBE from the University of Pennsylvania, where he also trained in Bioethics Mediation.
