Biography

Joshua Pearce is a Professor at the Ivey Business School, University of Western Ontario, specializing in Entrepreneurship and Sustainability. He holds the John M. Thompson Chair in Information Technology Innovation at the Thompson Centre for Engineering Leadership and Innovation. His research spans solar photovoltaic technology, open hardware, distributed recycling, additive manufacturing, policy, and economics. Joshua leads the Free Appropriate Sustainability Technology (FAST) research group and has consulted for multiple renewable energy and additive manufacturing companies funded by government and UN organizations. His work has shown that the levelized cost of solar photovoltaic electricity is economically competitive in North America, demonstrating that open hardware can save scientists 90-99% in research costs while showing that household-level distributed recycling manufacturing is technically feasible and environmentally beneficial. He has published notable works, including a book on open-source hardware, and serves as the editor-in-chief of HardwareX, a journal dedicated to open source scientific hardware. Joshua received his Ph.D. in Materials Engineering from Pennsylvania State University and has developed significant educational programs, including the Sustainability program for the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education and a graduate engineering program at Queen's University in Canada. He has also served as a Fulbright-Aalto University Distinguished Chair and visiting professor at institutions such as Aalto University and Université de Lorraine in France.
