Biography

Joshua Penslar is a full-time pediatric cardiologist and Assistant Professor at Queen’s University, having joined in January 2024. He completed his medical training at McMaster University, followed by a pediatrics residency and a pediatric cardiology fellowship at the Children’s Hospital Eastern Ontario, which is affiliated with the University of Ottawa. Additionally, he underwent subspecialty training in fetal cardiology at SickKids, associated with the University of Toronto, before joining the faculty in Kingston. Dr. Penslar's practice focuses on the diagnosis and management of congenital heart disease, infectious and inflammatory heart conditions, and arrhythmias. He has a particular interest in prenatal diagnosis of heart disease and the associated aspects of family counseling and genetic evaluation. As a contributor to several national collaborative academic projects, he is also a member of the Canadian Congenital Pediatric Cardiology Research Network. His research interests encompass palliative end-of-life care, ethics, psychosocial aspects of illness, and medical education. Outside of work, Dr. Penslar enjoys music, gardening, crafting, and spending time outdoors with family.
