Dr. Joshua Price

Biography

Joshua Price teaches Yiddish language literature and holds a Ph.D. in Yiddish Studies from Columbia University. His dissertation focused on the translation of world literature into Yiddish during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Price's work explores the relationship between translation and original writing, examining canonical figures such as Mendele and Jules Verne, Der Nister and Hans Christian Andersen, as well as Isaac Bashevis Singer and Thomas Mann. He conducts studies on the literary market dynamics in cities like Warsaw, New York, and Moscow, and applies distant readings of translations alongside close readings of the shifts in (pre-)maskilic norms and the Judaization of modern standards of ‘fidelity.’ His dissertation critically analyzes the concepts of modernization and normalization of Yiddish literature on the world stage.
