Biography

Joshua joined the Department of Chemical Engineering in 2023 as an assistant professor. His group operates at the intersection of chemical engineering, computer science, mathematics, and statistics to create solutions in optimization under uncertainty and data science to tackle challenges pertaining to sustainability, the environment, and energy. Since 2013, Joshua has developed his expertise through a wide range of projects that include unmanned aerial vehicle-based infrastructure inspection, resilient power grid operation and design, recovery of critical materials from wastewater, building fire evacuation, computer vision aided process control, and fundamental contributions to infinite-dimensional optimization. He has also leveraged his open-source software development skillset to implement research products via tools that promote methodological accessibility, foster collaboration, facilitate real-world application, and accelerate theoretical discovery. In all this, Joshua has had the privilege to collaborate with a considerable number of researchers in industry, academia, U.S. national laboratories, and the open-source software community motivating the highly interdisciplinary nature of his research.
