Biography

Joshua Teplitsky is the Joseph Meyerhoff Associate Professor of Modern Jewish History in the Department of History at the University of Pennsylvania. His research focuses on the history of Jewish life in early modern Central Europe, examining the nuances of the Jewish experience in broader contexts of Jewish-Christian interaction and minority histories. His recent book, "Prince Press: Collector Built History’s Enduring Remarkable Jewish Library" (Yale, 2019), investigates the history of an early eighteenth-century Jewish book collector, emphasizing material texts and the cultural implications of libraries. The book has received recognition, winning the Salo Baron Prize from the American Academy for Jewish Research, the Jordan Schnitzer Book Award from the Association for Jewish Studies, and was a finalist for the National Jewish Book Award. Teplitsky earned his PhD from New York University in 2012 and has participated in various fellowships, including those at the University of Oxford and the Rare Book School at the University of Virginia. Currently, he co-directs the digital humanities project “Footprints: Jewish Books Through Time and Place,” aimed at reconstructing the history of Jewish books. He also serves as an associate editor for the Encyclopedia of Jewish Book Cultures Online and participates in several scholarly initiatives.
