Joshua Van Kleef is a Senior Research Fellow at the John Curtin School of Medical Research, Australian National University, working in the Maddess Laboratory. His research combines neuroscience and engineering to study and control neural systems, focusing on leveraging pupil responses for developing non-contact medical devices that automatically detect signs of neuro-ophthalmic disease. He is also exploring brain-computer interfaces for direct communication between computers and the brain, as well as developing insect sensor networks utilizing biohybrid microrobots. Joshua has held various postdoctoral positions, including work at the University of California, Berkeley, where he focused on neural interfaces for wireless control of flying insects, and at ANU, where he studied the visual flight control of dragonflies. He holds a BSc from the University of Sydney, a BSc Honours from the University of New South Wales, and a PhD from ANU.
