Joshua J Ziarek is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmacology at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine. His academic journey began at the Medical College of Wisconsin, where he developed a fascination with the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) superfamily. His PhD work focused on combining NMR with biochemical and biophysical methods to rationally design therapeutic leads targeting chemokine receptors. Ziarek's research has led to the development of novel protein therapies, resulting in several patents and applications in various animal models for myocardial infarction, melanoma, and colorectal cancer. After earning his doctorate, he continued training in Prof. Gerhard Wagner’s group at Harvard Medical School, where his postdoctoral research was recognized by several prestigious awards, including the NIH Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award. He has established an independent research group focused on the molecular mechanisms of GPCR allostery, contributing to rational drug design related to substance use disorders. His research interests include biomolecular interactions and the rational design of molecular therapeutics, particularly regarding GPCRs.
