Josiah Tayag Catalan is a Filipino-American composer born in New York City and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. His compositional interests focus on discovering the intersections of various musical influences, including traditional, avant-garde, popular, and indigenous Philippine musics. He has been recognized as a finalist in the Thailand International Competition Festival and has received awards from NACUSA, the Sacramento State Festival of New American Music, the Megalopolis Saxophone Orchestra, and the American Prize Composer’s Awards. Josiah has previously served as a Fromm Foundation Composer Fellow and has been a Bilinski Fellow at the University of California, Davis. His music has been commissioned and performed internationally by a range of ensembles, including the Left Coast Chamber Ensemble, Earplay, and the Empyrean Ensemble, as well as notable individuals such as violinist Miranda Cuckson and percussionist Chris Froh. Catalan has contributed to numerous performances and conferences, showcasing his works at the Composers Conference and with the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players.
