Biography

Josie Gill is an Associate Professor at the University of Bristol, specializing in contemporary literature with a focus on Black British and Caribbean African American writing. Her research explores the intersections of literary and scientific ideas with questions of race. Notably, her book, 'Biofictions: Race, Genetics and the Contemporary Novel' (2020), engages with debates surrounding race and genetic science in contemporary literature, earning her the British Society for Literature and Science Book Prize in 2020 and a shortlist spot for the European Society for the Study of English Book Award in 2022. She was the Principal Investigator for the AHRC-funded project 'Literary Archaeology', which looked into the lived environment of enslaved people by collaborating with archaeological scientists and creative writers. She is also interested in the decolonization of universities and its impact on interdisciplinary research collaborations. In 2020-2022, she led a Wellcome Trust funded project on 'Black Health and the Humanities' located at the Centre for Black Humanities. In October 2022, she was awarded the Philip Leverhulme Prize to initiate a new book project focused on Black lecturers.
