Biography

Joud Al Korani is an Assistant Professor at Radboud University, specializing in Islam, Politics, and Society. With an academic background in anthropology and Middle Eastern Islamic Studies, Joud’s research primarily focuses on the everyday lives of migrants and how their religious practices are shaped in the aftermath of the Arab Spring. His work particularly emphasizes themes such as migration, transnationalism, statehood, and the relationality of subjectivity within the context of lived theology. Joud has conducted fieldwork in Dubai, examining how Muslim, middle-class migrant women navigate Islamic ethical practices and theological commitments amidst the unique challenges of living as noncitizens in a transient metropolis. His ongoing book project is based on this research and was recognized with the Gwenn Okruhlik Dissertation Award in 2022. Joud completed a six-month postdoctoral fellowship at the Orient-Institut in Beirut, where he organized a workshop on divine-human relations post-Arab Spring. He co-edited a special section for an upcoming issue of Comparative Studies of South Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. His current research explores the role of food in mediating divine-human relations in diverse communities, particularly through the lens of diasporic Syrian foodways in cities like Rotterdam, Dubai, and Mississauga. Additionally, he leads the Muslim Foodways Network alongside Stefan Williamson Fa.
