Biography

Joy Sleeman is a Professor in Art History Theory at the Slade School of Fine Art, University College London. She studied History of Art at UCL and completed her PhD at the University of Leeds in 1995. Since then, she has been actively involved in teaching art history theory at the Slade and was Faculty Graduate Tutor for the Arts & Humanities from 2014 to 2017. She currently serves as the Director of Research at the Slade. Her academic career includes notable appointments such as the Henry Moore Fellow in History of Sculpture at UCL and a visiting professorship at the University of Lincoln. Joy has been an editorial board member for Sculpture Journal and is a member of AICA, the international association of art critics. Her contributions to academia include writing, curating, and lecturing on land art and sculpture. She has a strong commitment to public engagement and has delivered lectures at various institutions both in the UK and internationally. Joy’s research interests focus on land art, particularly the Anglo-American artistic relations and the contributions of British artists to this field. Her recent projects examine historical and contemporary perspectives on land art and its relationship with the environment, seeking to challenge prevailing narratives.
