Biography

Joyce L. S. Bruhn de Garavito is a Professor in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at the University of Western Ontario. She was born in Bogotá, Colombia, and has a rich bicultural background with her mother being British and her father American. After earning her B.A. in Philosophy from Universidad Nacional de Colombia, she moved to Montreal where she obtained her M.A. in Applied Linguistics from Concordia University and later completed her Ph.D. in Linguistics at McGill University. Joyce has dedicated her career to the study and teaching of linguistics, focusing on morphosyntax, bilingualism, language contact, and the application of linguistic theory to language teaching. Throughout her academic journey, she has made significant contributions to the fields of linguistic theory and acquisition, specifically examining the complexities of Spanish morphosyntax and the educational implications of these linguistic issues. She has received numerous awards for her excellence in teaching and research, including the Graham Gail Wright Distinguished Scholar award and the Edward G. Pleva Award for excellence in teaching. Moreover, she currently serves as Chair of her department, overseeing various academic initiatives while continuing to engage in impactful research projects.
